ok here are some tips on how to improve your nfs carbon experience on vista.
1. set compatibility mode on windows xp. this was already mentioned.
2. run the game as administrator, you do this by right mouse click on the nfs carbon icon and choose run as administrator
3. increase your virtual memory as much as double the size of your available memory, you have to do some math here because you have to place some values in MB.
4. rename the movies folder...though you will really miss the awesome cut scenes.
5. another reason, is its not adopting well with your widescreen monitor, if this is the case, just download the patch, search google for nfs carbon patch.
