This seems to happen from time to time if multithreaded rendering is enabled. Until the video drivers are adapted to SS3's multithreaded renderer it should be disabled (as it is by default).
It's the following console command:
ren_bMultiThreadedRendering = 0
I had the same kind of freeze after playing several hours through several levels. After I disabled multithread rendering the game ran rock stable - albeit with more severe fps drops in intense scenes.
